Deep within the enchanting rolling meadows, lived a young shepherd. His life was essentially pure, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was essentially to care for his herd of rams.
Their low murmuring and the murmuring of the gales through the single tree on the hilltop were his main associates. Day in day, guarding his wards instilled in him a notion of calm satisfaction.
However, there were at times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would long for companionship. In one such instance from sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a naughty plot.
Narratives of predators preying on sheep had been heard times and again in the hamlet. So, the boy decided to used this fear and played a joke on the inhabitants.
One morning he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! A wolf is that has taken my sheep!” The frightened villagers ran up the hills to help but found no wolf.
The boy giggled at the confusion on their faces. This game continued for a few more days. Yet, one noon, a real wolf actually attack the herd. The shepherd boy ran for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he went back to the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the consequences of dishonesty.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is difficult to regain. It's a story here as pertinent today as it was in the past.
